Erika Steuerwald

Associate, Indianapolis

Erika is an Associate Attorney with the Health Care and Litigation practice groups at SKO. She joined the firm in 2022, when SKO merged with Katz Korin Cunningham, where she had practiced since mid-2021.

Erika focuses her practice on the defense of medical professionals throughout all stages of litigation, including depositions, mediations, and trial settings. She handles a wide variety of matters ranging from medical malpractice actions, correctional and civil rights actions, license disciplinary investigations and complaints, administrative proceedings and judicial reviews, and general civil defense.

Health Care: Erika possesses a solid background in representing health care practitioners whose license(s) is being investigated/restricted by a professional licensing board. Such complaints may be filed by patients or others against the practitioner or from arrests, concerns over substance abuse, or referrals from other investigative agencies such as the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). When this occurs, the best action to take is to retain an experienced attorney. Erika is intimately aware of the actions and procedure used in board proceedings.

Litigation: Erika provides strategic advice to professionals faced with disputes, lawsuits, arbitration, and other conflicts. She helps her client manage disputes on the front end with guidance on sound business practices.

Prior to joining Katz Korin Cunningham, Erika worked as a Deputy Attorney General in the Indiana Office of the Attorney General’s Medical Licensing Section and the Indiana State Department. As Deputy General, she investigated licensure complaints against health care practitioners including physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, physician’s assistants, health facility administrators, and behavioral health professionals. In her latter position, she gained experience working with the Indiana State Department of Health focusing on investigation and enforcement actions involving nursing homes, assisted living facilities, home health care agencies, and hospitals.

Additionally, she gained valuable experience working as a judicial extern to Magistrate Judge Mark Dinsmore of the Southern District Court of Indiana. Following graduation from law school, Erika worked in government relations where she advocated for businesses before the Indiana General Assembly, Congress, and various state and federal agencies.
