In Memoriam

John “Jack” T. Ballantine passed away on April 9, 2019, in Louisville at the age of 88. Jack had a half-century career in Stoll Keenon Ogden’s Louisville’s office that began in 1958. He served as General Counsel to the Firm and was a Member of the Tort, Trial & Insurance Services and Arbitration & Mediation practice groups.

For his decades of accomplishments, and his exceptional reputation in his areas of practice, Jack was recognized as a Senior Statesman by Chambers USA, which ranks leading law firms. The Kentucky Bar Association named him the Outstanding Lawyer of 2003. He was AV Preeminent® Peer Review Rated by Martindale-Hubbell® and listed in Best Lawyers in America®. He received the Judge Benjamin Shobe Award of the Louisville Bar Association for Professionalism and Civility.

He was an Honorary Lifetime Board Member for the Kentucky Derby Festival® and was active with the Legal Aid Society Campaign for Justice. He served on the board of directors for various hospitals, Metro United Way and other charitable organizations.

Jack was among the best in his field and will be greatly missed at the firm, in the courtroom and in the Louisville community. At SKO, his dedication to upholding the highest values of the profession is carried on through each team member, especially his son Douglas C. Ballantine. Doug has been with the firm since 1990 and serves as Chair of the Business Tort practice. He is also the 2018-2019 President of the Kentucky Bar Association.
