Ashley J. Butler

Ashley is a Member in the Louisville office, having joined Stoll Keenon Ogden in 2022. She contributes to the health care, business litigation, and torts, trials, and insurance practice groups. Her practice focuses on representing hospital, nursing home, mental health facility and physician defendants in multifaceted medical negligence lawsuits through all facets of pre suit investigation, discovery, trial, and appeals. Ashley is proficient in HIPAA, JCAHO, EMTALA and similar federal regulations.  She assists clients with contract negotiations, mediations, risk assessment and collaborates with them to improve the delivery of healthcare.  Ashley has had numerous trial successes in catastrophic medical litigation. 

A native of Mortons Gap, Kentucky, Ashley holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master’s degree in psychology, both from the University of Kentucky. As an undergraduate, she was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Ashley earned her law degree from the University of Kentucky J. David Rosenberg College of Law. During law school, she was awarded two merit scholarships, was member of the Moot Court Board and served as vice president of Phi Delta Phi, the professional fraternity for the legal profession.

Early in her career, Ashley practiced at two Louisville law firms. She then became a founding Shareholder and Partner with McMasters Keith Butler, Inc., which has since merged with Stoll Keenon Ogden.  McMasters Keith Butler, Inc. was certified by the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) and profiled in the Courier Journal as the most successful women’s owned law firm in the state. 

Named a top lawyer by her peers, Ashley is a member of the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys, the only entity accredited by the American Bar Association to certify attorneys as specialists in the areas of medical malpractice and legal malpractice law. She is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, an invitation only organization.

In addition to her legal practice, Ashley speaks frequently at conferences, to various student groups with an interest in law, and to classes at the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law and the University of Louisville Paralegal Studies Program.

Health Care: Ashley counsels her clients on dispute resolution, hospital risk management, and drafting of policies and procedures to comply with changing statutory and regulatory law. She has special expertise in Joint Commission reporting requirements and sentinel event investigation, as well as issues encountered with university-based hospitals and physicians

Business Litigation: Ashley and her colleagues offer strategic advice to clients who are parties to lawsuits, helping them achieve the best possible outcome while minimizing the stress and distractions lawsuits inevitably causes. They also offer guidance on sound business practices that can make litigation less likely to occur.

Torts, Trials, and Insurance: Ashley defends medical clients against claims related to malpractice and professional liability. Her deep experience working with medical clients gives her the ability to quickly grasp and address the inherent complexity of these cases.
