WUKY & Community Partners Fill 2,500 Backpacks For Children In Need

By WUKY STAFF

WUKY’s Partnership with God’s Pantry Food Bank, along with Stewart Perry of State Farm Insurance, Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC, Mr. Sparkle Car Wash and UK Federal Credit Union was a huge success for both organizations and a great way to end 2018. Thanks to our sponsor’s help God’s Pantry was able to fill and deliver 2500 Backpacks to kids in need. WUKY also set a record for yearend gifts from listeners and supporters.

WUKY is Central Kentucky’s Premiere NPR Station with historical roots spanning over 78 years.  For the past several years, WUKY has partnered with God’s Pantry Food Bank to raise awareness of the Backpack program.  Stewart Perry of State Farm Insurance, Stoll Keenon Ogden PLLC, Mr. Sparkle Car Wash and UK Federal Credit Union sponsored the campaign to help fight Child Hunger.  For every donation made to WUKY until December 31st, 2018 our partners filled a backpack for a child in need. These generous sponsors will fill up to 2500 backpacks for at-risk children with the support of WUKY Listeners, which is a 1000 more backpacks than last year.

“The poverty rate in Fayette County is 20.9% and the child food insecurity rate in the county is 17.1%…  Another tool, Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap, tells us 10,490 food insecure children live in Lexington.”

God’s Pantry Food Bank distributes up to 860 bags of food weekly. Each bag contains 7-10 kid-friendly items of food such as a protein-rich main dish (macaroni and cheese or chicken and rice), shelf-stable milk, fruit cups, granola bars, and other items chosen by a registered dietitian.
